Planning your visit

York Researchers’ Night (YorNight) 2020 took place at York Barbican on Saturday 8 February from 2pm to 7.30pm. All activities, talks and the science cabaret were FREE to attend.

Venue

YorNight 2020 took place at York Barbican, Paragon Street, York, YO10 4AH (map). York’s largest music and arts venue, York Barbican is located close to the historic city walls and is just a five-minute walk from Clifford’s Tower.

Times

All our family-friendly activities ran continuously from 2pm to 6pm. Short 15- and 20-minute talks took place between 2.30pm and 6pm, and our science cabaret ran from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Booking

Free tickets could be booked in advance online or at the York Barbican Box Office on the day.

Families

Families were warmly welcomed to YorNight. Many of our activities were designed specifically with the young in mind. As well as offering a fantastic insight into the exciting world of research, our events might even have provided a glimpse into a future career.

Food and drink

A range of hot food, snacks and drinks, including pizza slices, wedges and kettle crisps, were available to buy at York Barbican from 2pm to 6pm.

Travel and transport

Many local bus services serve the city centre, including the Park & Ride. Bus information can be found by visiting the First Group website or the Park & Ride website.

York railway station is approximately a 20-minute walk from York Barbican, and ample bicycle racks are available at the venue.

While it was recommended that visitors to YorNight arrived by public transport, there are several car parks near York Barbican including the Barbican Q-Park. Information on alternative city car parking can be found on the iTravel York website. You can buy a discounted parking voucher for the Barbican Q-Park from the Barbican Box Office for £6.50, which is valid for eight hours. To redeem the discount, park your car first, then take your Q-Park ticket to the Box Office.

Accessibility

York Barbican has step-free access into the auditorium, meeting rooms and bars, and a lift to the first floor. The main entrance/Box Office entrance has level access from the piazza on Paragon Street.

All bars and the Box Office have low level counter positions and an accessible toilet is available on both floors of the Barbican. Hearing and assistance dogs are welcome throughout the building, and dog mats are available on request. 

Limited disabled parking spaces are available at the nearby Barbican Q-Park.
