Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The Department of Mathematics is committed to equality and diversity, ensuring that there are no barriers for anyone irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, disability or other characteristics.

We aim to provide a supportive and inclusive working environment that encourages all students and members of staff to fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions.

Head of Department’s view

"Research and teaching in the Department is enriched by staff and students with diverse backgrounds, from the UK and globally.  We already have a large number of nationalities represented amongst staff in the Department and we are striving for as good a gender balance with staff as we have with students.  We need to continue to address the widening participation, diversity, equality and inclusion agendas amongst staff and students alike.  There should be no barriers to academic careers or study in York based on any grounds that are irrelevant to the field of mathematics.  The Department will not tolerate unlawful discrimination of any kind.”
