Research Data Stewardship Network

Join the Research Data Stewardship Network at the University of York

The University of York is proud to introduce the Research Data Stewardship Network, a network to bring together colleagues from across the University who play a role in the management and reuse of research data.

Join the Network and benefit from a dedicated communications channel (Slack). A space to connect with others in similar positions, to discuss data stewardship roles and activities, for peer support, sharing knowledge and signposting to resources, to break down siloes and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The Network also aims to increase the visibility of the data stewardship work done across the University and the vital role ‘data stewards’ play in the research process. You may not have 'data steward' in your job title but we know many of you perform data stewardship activities as part of your workload. With a little information from Network members, we will map where data stewardship activities are already happening at the University, highlighting your important contribution.

What is data stewardship?

‘Data stewardship’ is a term that encompasses a broad range of activities in the management of research data throughout its lifecycle, from creation to reuse.

Do you play a role in…

  • planning research data management
  • designing and managing data infrastructure, workflows and processes
  • policy and protocol development for the management of research data
  • robust data governance
  • data discovery, data transformation, data cleaning, validating, mapping and mining data
  • curating and preserving research data
  • creating metadata and documentation for research data
  • preparing data for archiving and onward sharing advocating for and applying the FAIR principles
  • delivering support and training on best practice for data management, perhaps in the discipline you support?

If you spend some of your time, or a significant amount of your time, performing any of the activities listed above, join the Network and connect with other colleagues engaged in data stewardship across the institution.

“Anyone who interacts with data in a significant way, at any point in the research data lifecycle, is a data steward.” Sonraí, Irish Data Stewardship Network
