We are carrying out work to improve our database system which will necessitate two significant periods of downtime for a number of systems on Tuesday 8 and Tuesday 15 December.

A new way to get IT support

The IT Support Office in Fairhurst closes at 5pm on Friday 18 December. From Monday 21 December you'll be able to get help with IT at the Library Help Desk, until 4pm on Christmas Eve. We’ll re-open there at 9am on Monday 4 January.

Heidi Fraser-Krauss - our new Director

Password policies for associate staff

Password policies have been applied to staff accounts at the University following recommendations from our auditors and requirements from funding bodies. We will now roll-out these policies to associate staff accounts between 1 and 29 September 2015.

CityConnect: wifi for campus visitors

We’re pleased to announce that the City of York’s wifi, CityConnect, is now available on campus. It’s provided on our network, in conjunction with the council, in the same way that eduroam is now available in the city centre, hosted on the council’s network.

Network at risk

On 20 and 21 June, Estates will be carrying out work to remove the covered walkway by Vanbrugh Piazza. As the covered walkway houses cables including those used for the network, we will be rerouting some network services on Tuesday 16 and Thursday 18 June. Please see the details below of how this may affect services.

York Print Plus upgrade

We are carrying out vital work to upgrade the York Print Plus service on Tuesday 7 July. As a result, all York Print Plus services will be unavailable between 7am and 11am*, and should be considered at risk until midday (ie they may not be working as expected).

Many staff and students will be aware that the University lost external network connectivity on Saturday (21 February) from around 8.15pm till around 9.15pm. This was an issue that affected us and a number of other universities in the Yorkshire and Humberside area.

Security issues for Lenovo laptops/PCs

You may have seen press reports about security concerns affecting Lenovo laptops and PCs. These concerns centre on hidden adware installed on the machines which affects their security. The problem affects models sold in the last six months - Lenovo state that the adware is not installed on any machines now being sold.
