Information for prospective students


If you have received an offer from the University of York, you will be given access to your own personal space at You@York – your personal gateway to the information you will need when deciding if York is the university for you. You will receive your username and password when you receive your offer letter from the University of York. 

What we provide

  • IT classrooms and study areas across Heslington campus and at The King's Manor provide over 890 open access PCs
  • Printing/photocopying/scanning facilities are located in or near all IT rooms
    • You can print in black and white or colour, on A4 or A3, and double or single sided
    • You can send your work to print from IT classrooms and study areas, the wireless network, your study bedroom, your tablet or mobile, or the VPN
    • You receive free print credits every term, and can top them up as necessary
  • Your University email account is provided via Google Apps for Education. Google Apps also gives you access to:
    • Calendar - import your personal timetable
    • Drive - collaborate on documents & access them from anywhere
    • Sites - create and share your own website 
  • Your IT account includes central file storage - it’s all regularly backed up, and protected by a firewall and anti-virus software


  • Most IT Services classrooms and study areas are wheelchair accessible
  • Various assistive technologies are provided to help students with disabilities.

IT training

  • Online training modules, designed specifically for York students, are delivered via the VLE, covering:
    • IT skills needed for academic study
    • IT skills for employment
  • One-to-one mentoring is available for those who are less comfortable working with computers

Using your own computer

In your study bedroom

  • You can connect to the network from your study bedroom, using the wifi or wired network. This allows you to use services including:

  • Wireless access is available across campus

Access from elsewhere

  • Remote access to the campus network, including your filestore and other resources, is available via a virtual private network (VPN). See:
