Epidemiology of blood cancers
Also within the Centre for Blood Research, Professor Alex Smith heads up the team working on a unique population-based patient cohort studied by the Hematological Malignancies Research Network (HMRN).
This comprises all patients diagnosed with a haematological malignancy or related precursor condition within the study region of around 4m people in the north of England.
Originally established by Professor Eve Roman, HMRN enrolls approximately 2,500 patients per year to the cohort on the day they are diagnosed. Progress is regularly tracked using diagnostic and follow up laboratory data generated by our collaborating diagnostic service in Leeds HMDS, with clinical data being extracted directly from patients' medical records.
HMRN has a large dedicated Patient Partnership led by Professor Debra Howells, which ensures that the research reflects the interests of patients and carers.
