Why study creative technologies at York?

We cover the breadth of digital theory and practice. Discover AR and VR, games, user experience design, web apps, music production and the future of live performance. You’ll explore the societal implications of new technologies and learn to become a socially and ethically conscious creative innovator.

Through project-based practical learning, we'll challenge you to develop technology-driven solutions to contemporary issues. Our extensive range of option modules gives you the freedom to explore topics you're passionate about.

We have partnerships across Yorkshire. We lead the CoSTAR Live Lab project, exploring how technology can transform the live performance sector. Our industry links also bring professionals into the School to deliver masterclasses and attend our annual Interactive Media (IM) Showcase. They’re a great way to build your network and enhance your career prospects.

There are opportunities for you to spend time abroad during your course. You'll also have the chance to take a placement year.

If you're studying at a university outside the UK, you may be able to spend up to a year in York as a visiting student.

Our £35m arts and media complex houses exceptional facilities and equipment to support your professional development. Explore VR and AR in our Immersive Lab. Our Virtual Production Lab includes motion capture technologies. Code, build apps and make games in our design labs.
We ranked =1st for 'Learning opportunities' and 2nd for 'Academic support' among universities included for media studies in the National Student Survey, 2025.

Facilities

You'll be a part of a thriving interdisciplinary community and benefit from exceptional facilities in our £35m arts and media complex and in the Ron Cooke Hub.

We have two media and design labs to support the design, production and post-production of all types of creative technology assets. You'll have access to our Immersive Labs for VR and AR play and development. Our Virtual Production Lab has motion capture technology and virtual production setups to create immersive digital environments. 

Explore new and emerging technologies in the Creativity Lab on Campus West. The lab offers bespoke workshops and drop-in sessions. You can hire equipment from VR headsets to cameras and audio workstations, or host your podcast in our podcasting studio. The lab has accessible desk space with 16 high-end gaming workstations equipped with creative editing software and access to game engines like Unreal and Unity.

Careers

  • Take an optional year in industry and gain work experience during your degree. Students have secured placements such as: Full-stack Developer at CERN, a Game Designer at Criterion, and Solutions Consulting at Adobe.
  • You'll enter the professional world equipped with analytic, technical and design skills, which are relevant in a wide range of creative technology sectors.
  • Our graduates have secured positions with an extensive range of companies and organisations in film and television production and post-production, as well as theatre and games across the UK and internationally. Others have used their transferable skills to establish careers in a range of other sectors including education, events, marketing and commerce.
