News | Posted on Tuesday 19 March 2024

Find out about ESAY's Sustainability and Policy elective module available to 3rd Year undergraduate students in 2024/25.

Learn how policy engagement is used to tackle environmental and social challenges. Work in multi-disciplinary student groups and use engagement to solve challenges faced in developed and developing countries.

Sustainability and Policy is a sustainability-focused elective module available to all 3rd Year undergraduate students in 2024/25 (subject to timetabling availability/Department constraints). In this interdisciplinary module offered by the Stockholm Environment Institute at York (SEI-Y), students learn how policy engagement is used to tackle environmental and social challenges.

This Semester, our 3rd Year students have enjoyed delving into this module. Here’s what they have to say:

“I’ve really enjoyed this module so far. I’ve found working on real life, sustainability challenges within business very relevant and beneficial to my degree as a whole. It has also given me an insight into the process behind consultancy which will serve me well once graduated”.

"I've been enjoying the ESAY elective so far. It's allowed me to deepen my knowledge about sustainability and climate science outside of the modules offered by my department, where sustainability is just a small section. I also appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with students outside of my department who can bring fresh perspectives to the table and challenge my way of thinking."

"So far, the content and activities have been interesting and stimulating. The work feels more applicable to the real world and useful for employability in comparison to traditional module work."

"The Sustainability and Policy module is a truly enjoyable module. The workshops are fun and we get to delve into what sustainability is and how not only individuals but whole companies can improve their sustainable practices. The group project assessment is also an intriguing challenge as it inspires us to explore further into particular companies or organisations, to discover how they work. As well as this, the module makes me question my knowledge and allows me to expand my skills into discovering more about the world we live in and how to make a sustainable difference."
