Student pregnancy journey

This journey provides details of the steps that might happen but not necessarily in the order shown below, when a student or applicant discloses a pregnancy.

  • A Student consults their doctor and/or other appropriate services and considers disclosing a pregnancy to the University.
  • The Student then may decide to request a meeting with their Academic Supervisor or other member of departmental staff, to disclose a pregnancy.
  • Following the disclosure, it is recommended that the Academic Supervisor or other member of departmental staff and the student, start to complete the Pregnancy and Maternity Support Plan. This may highlight implications of the pregnancy for the programme of study and will need to be considered by the Academic Supervisor or other member of departmental staff.  Advice on completing the form can be sought from the Equality and Diversity Office and/or a Student Adviser by completing the Student Advice Self Referral Form
  • The student can also discuss other issues with a Student Adviser (for example, those relating to finance, accommodation, and academic progression) by completing the Student Advice Self Referral Form; the Equality and Diversity Office; their college and other relevant offices and departments.
  • The Academic Supervisor or other member of departmental staff and the student review the Pregnancy and Maternity Support Plan and if necessary complete a Risk Assessment Form.
  • The Academic Supervisor or other member of departmental staff to communicate with other relevant offices/departments as agreed with the student in the Support Plan.
  • The Support Plan is monitored by the Academic Supervisor or other member of departmental staff and the student and if required updated and further adjustments made.
  • In the event of a disagreement between a student and their department on how the pregnancy/maternity leave should be managed, the Academic Registrar may be asked to make a final decision.
