Pride flag raising and parade 2026

On Wednesday 3 June our LGBTQ+ staff and students gathered at Greg’s Place to raise the Progress Pride flag to mark and celebrate the beginning of Pride month.

Despite the poor weather on the day, our community came together to reflect on the difficult and challenging climate facing the LGBTQ+ community. This year's speeches reflected these challenges in the UK and across the world, especially for our trans, non binary and gender non-conforming communities.

Our Pride flag raising event was instigated by an LGBTQ+ staff member, Dr Adrian Lee, in 2015, and remains staff and student led. Each year speakers include LGBTQ+ students and staff, and senior leaders. You can read more about the origins and purpose of the flag raising event.

Thank you to our campus trade unions, UNISON and UCU, for sponsoring the event again this year, and providing much appreciated refreshments for the celebration.

Pride parade 2026

Staff, students and our Trade Union colleagues met on Saturday 30 May to raise our banners in celebration at the annual Pride parade, in a public demonstration of the University's commitment to its LGBTQ+ staff, students, and wider communities.

This year’s Pride attracted an estimated 20,000 people from York and beyond, including local colleges, schools, businesses, charities, churches and community organisations.

As a Silver sponsor, the University had a stall at the Knavesmire, providing an opportunity to engage with the public in a range of fun and interactive activities to showcase academic diversity and build positive relationships with communities and potential future students.

A huge thank you to our parade and stall volunteers for making our involvement in Pride 2026 such a success!
