A regular bus service operates between the University (with its terminus in the campus) and Acomb, via the railway station. This route (ftr no 4) is operated by modern low floor buses with wheelchair spaces. It runs Monday to Saturday between 06.25 and 23.50 approximately every 10 minutes and on Sunday approximately every 15 minutes. The 44/Unibus service runs to Heslington East. Some buses on this route are wheelchair-accessible, but not all: to see which, check the 44/Unibus timetable.
A journey by taxi from the railway station to the University takes from 15 to 20 minutes and costs about £8.
The most visited places on the Heslington campus are:
All car parks have bays reserved for disabled badge holders, for whom parking is free. Others have to pay before 18:00. There are an additional number of specified disabled parking bays marked on the map.
There is limited parking at the King’s Manor for disabled badge holders – check first with the porters at Reception for availability.
The level of physical access to the Heslington campus is good. Buildings throughout the campus are linked by covered ways and ramps replace steps at ground level in most parts of the university, so that there is fairly free movement for wheelchairs. A level route is marked as a pink thick dotted line on the map of the campus.
The main teaching, lecture and social spaces have been checked for physical accessibility, and all lecture theatres and the vast majority of seminar rooms have hearing loops. Most buildings have an accessible lavatory, and there are disabled refuges throughout the campus with an ‘intercom’. Each zone of the campus has a Facilities Manager who can help, and there is a Duty Manager on duty at public events in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall and Central Hall. All public access buildings on the campus and at the King’s Manor have lifts.
Advice is available on visiting the archives at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research.
Guide dogs are welcome on campus, including in University accommodation
