UK (home) tuition fee rates 2025/26 entry
Research training support charge
Depending on the nature of your research project, an additional annual research training support charge (known as 'bench fees' at some universities) may be applied. These charges are similar to the UK Research Councils' standard Research Training and Support Grants.
Not all research projects incur this charge. It's most common for research in laboratories or involving substantial fieldwork. Get in touch with the department you're applying to if you wish to discuss this prior to application.
We do not normally impose research training support charges on self-funded students.
Research training support charges help to cover the costs of your project. This may include:
- laboratory consumables
- travel and conference attendance
- incidental costs of research training
- books, software and hardware.
You should discuss the potential costs of your project with your supervisor at York. Details of any charges will be discussed at your interview and then specified in your offer letter. When you accept your offer, you accept the charge in addition to your course tuition fee.
Neither you nor any sponsor owns any equipment purchased with a training support charge. Full title to such goods remains with the University.
Continuation fees
If you need to extend your study beyond the normal period of enrolment due to unforeseen circumstances, you will be charged a continuation fee. The continuation fee for 2025/26 is £460.
