The University of York has developed 3 online integrity tutorials to prepare our students for the appropriate academic level and ensure the integrity of our graduates. All students at the University must complete the correct tutorial as a compulsory progression requirement. 

  1. Academic Integrity Tutorial - For all taught students (undergraduate and taught masters)
  2. Research Integrity Tutorial - For all Postgraduate Research students (PhD, research masters)
  3. IPC Integrity Tutorial - For all students at the International Pathway College

The appropriate integrity tutorial should be located in your VLE module list. If you have more than one version of the tutorial (for example if you are a joint honours students), you only need to do the tutorial once. If you do not have an Integrity Tutorial in your VLE, email integrity@york.ac.uk Please see the tabs below for further information on the tutorials.

Please note: The integrity tutorials are not to be confused with the Academic Skills Tutorials which are also located in your VLE module list.

Academic Integrity Tutorial

What is it?

The Academic Integrity Tutorial provides students with an introduction to the principals and practice of academic integrity. It is comprised of 3 sections:

  1. Academic Misconduct - explains the main forms of misconduct according to University policy, why students struggle with these concepts and how to avoid them.
  2. Acknowledgement - explains the importance, reasoning and practicality of how to acknowledge and incorporate sources into academic work.
  3. Referencing - explains why referencing is important, looks at the different citation and referencing systems used at the University. 

Each section is followed by a short test to check your comprehension, you must achieve 100% in each test in order to pass the tutorial and this will be automatically recorded in your student record.

Who should do it?

It is compulsory for all Undergraduate and Postgraduate students on taught programmes (except IPC students). 

When should it be completed?

This depends on your course and department, so check your handbook. Usually you are expected to complete the AIT before submitting your first assignment at the end of your first term. If you do not complete the tutorial you will not be allowed to progress with your studies.

How do I know I have completed it?

Once you have completed all tests with 100% the section marked Academic Integrity Certificate will be opened for you and you will see a congratulations message informing you of your completion.

Research Integrity Tutorial

What is it?

The Research Integrity Tutorial provides research students with an introduction to the principals and practice of research intergtiy. It is comprised of 3 sections:

  1. Academic Integrity - This covers the concept of academic integrity, and explains academic misconduct, acknolwedgement and referencing. 
  2. Research Integrity - Helps you to understand what is meant by integrity in the research context; know who to turn to for advice and what training is available; are aware of the pressures of a large research project and are able to manage the many different aspects of the research process.
  3. Ethical Considerations and Approval - introduces you to the University's of York's ethical framework for the conduct of research, including practical advice on the ethical approval process.

Each section is followed by a short test to check your comprehension, you must achieve 100% in each test in order to pass the tutorial and gain access to your Research Integrity Certificate.

Who should do it?

It is compulsory for all Postgraduate Research students (PhD/Research Masters)

When should it be completed?

It should be completed before your first Thesis Advisory Panel. If you have not completed the Research Integrty Tutorial you will not be able to confirm your enrolment on your course. 

Where is it?

The Research Integrity Tutorial is located in the VLE module list.

How do I know I have completed it?

Once you have completed all tests with 100% the section marked Academic Integrity Certificate will be opened for you and you will see a congratulations message informing you of your completion.

IPC Integrity Tutorial

What is it?

The IPC Integrity Tutorial provides IPC students with an introduction to the principals and practice of academic integrity in plain English. It is comprised of 2 sections:

  • What is Academic Integrity?
  • What is Referencing

Each section is followed by a short test to check your comprehension, you must achieve 100% in each test in order to pass the tutorial and gain access to your IPC Integrity Certifcate.

Who should do it?

All IPC students.

Where is it?

The IPC Integrity Tutorial is located in the VLE module list.

How do I know I have completed it?

Once you have completed all tests with 100% the section marked Academic Integrity Certificate will be opened for you and you will see a congratulations message informing you of your completion.
