First Bus travel advice

News

Posted on Friday 24 October 2025

Revenue Protection Officers (RPOs), will be on board the UN1 night service in the coming weeks to check tickets, provide customer service and support a respectful travel environment for all.

Why you might see an RPO

RPOs are deployed by First Bus to check that everyone has paid correctly for their journey, either by holding a valid ticket or using the Tap On Tap Off system. They also help with general customer service queries and managing passenger behaviour, making journeys safer and more pleasant for everyone on board.

RPOs will be in uniform and carry First Bus ID. They may also use CCTV and Body Worn Cameras (BWCs) to record any interactions.

Preparing for your journey

To avoid delays or fines, make sure you’re travel-ready:

Have a valid ticket or pass

  • This could be a printed ticket, mobile app ticket, or contactless Tap On Tap Off journey (remember to carry the card/device used).
  • Don’t discard your printed ticket before your journey ends.

Have any required ID

  •  If you're using a discounted ticket (e.g. student or child fare), ensure you have your proof of eligibility (such as a U19 Photocard or student ID).
  •  Travel Pass users (e.g. Senior, Blind or Disabled Pass) should carry the pass with them and be ready to show it.

If you’re unable to present a valid ticket, evidence of payment, or the correct ID when asked, you may unfortunately be issued with a penalty fare.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Travelling further than your ticket allows
  • Using child tickets if you’re over 16
  • Using discounted or concessionary passes without eligibility or correct ID

On-board behaviour expectations

To help ensure a respectful environment for everyone:

  • Do not smoke or vape on the bus
  • Avoid loud music, use headphones and keep the volume down
  • Keep feet off the seats
  • Avoid eating or drinking alcohol while on board

Passengers behaving anti-socially - including smoking, loud music, or drinking alcohol - may be asked to leave the bus. Serious incidents may result in police involvement and use of CCTV/BWC footage for prosecution.

Respect the city and community

Finally, we ask all passengers arriving in the city centre via night services to act respectfully towards residents, local business owners, and others using public spaces. Be considerate and help keep our city welcoming for everyone.
