Check-In: You said, we did
Posted on Friday 10 October 2025
In May 2025, we asked for your feedback on Check-In via a staff and student survey. Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete it.
Since then, we have noted what you think works well and we have worked hard on scoping and implementing, where possible, suggested improvements.
You said, we did
You said… can we access Check-In via the MyUoY app?
Over 85% of respondents said having access to Check-In via the MyUoY app would make logging in easier.
Our teams worked hard over the summer so that, from September 2025, you can find Check-In in the quick links on the MyUoY app homepage.
You said… two-factor authentication takes too long
Using Check-In via the app should be quicker as the My UoY app shares the same Duo token as when logging into the Timetable system for Check-In.
You said… other data - in addition to teaching session attendance - should be used to measure engagement
You said information such as assessment data, accessing lecture capture, attendance at supervision meetings and how you’re accessing the Library should all count towards engagement with your studies.
From September 2025, supervision data is now available in Check-In and we are exploring how we can include other data in the future, including lecture capture and assessment data.
You said… I want to be contacted by email
This confirms we’re on the right track with our approach to checking in with you. We contact you via email in the first instance when we might have concerns about your wellbeing.
You said… Check-in should consider SSPs before doing the wellbeing checks
We do use Student Support Plan (SSP) information to contextualise your engagement before we contact you.
You said… the emails we get as a response to not attending sessions can feel a bit harsh
Check-In is a wellbeing tool that allows us to better notice when you may need extra help.
From September 2025, we have reworded our emails so that they are as supportive as possible and outline, in the clearest way, all the various forms of support that you can call upon.
You said… I want to use my laptop to Check-In rather than a mobile phone
You can access Check In via checkin.york.ac.uk on your laptop or other devices.
You said… Check in feels like it has potential to be used for punitive action
Check-In is not a punitive system. The purpose of Check-In is to support student welfare and wellbeing by making the University aware at a much earlier stage where students may be experiencing difficulties and are not able to engage with their programmes.
You said… I would like to see fireworks animations after a successful Check In
While we haven’t got to this stage yet, did you know you can see your own engagement information on Check In? There is a screen called Attendance Check, which shows a breakdown of your teaching sessions.
After the consolidation week at the end of October 2025, you will see a new screen, which will show you attendance percentages of teaching sessions linked to your modules.
You said… I worry when sometimes lecturers forget to give out the code
We work closely with departments to ensure that codes are populated for sessions. If a code isn’t populated, however, this does not negatively affect your engagement data.
