New guest wifi launching soon: UoY‑Fi Guest

News

Posted on Tuesday 28 April 2026

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new guest wifi service, UoY‑Fi Guest, which will replace the current guest wifi network CityConnect. The new service will be launched on Monday 11 May.

UoY‑Fi Guest has been introduced to provide a more consistent and secure wifi experience for visitors across our campus, making it easier for guests to get online when visiting the University.

What’s changing?

  • UoY‑Fi Guest is our new guest wifi network
  • CityConnect will be retired and will no longer be available
  • Guests should now connect to UoY‑Fi Guest instead

UoY‑Fi Guest uses a modern security standard (Enhanced Open Transition Mode) that helps make open wifi safer, with no usernames or passwords needed. Most devices will automatically connect securely, and older devices can still join as normal.

As with all public wifi, it’s best used for everyday browsing. Avoid accessing sensitive services and look for secure websites (https) when online.

Who should use UoY‑Fi Guest?

UoY‑Fi Guest is intended for:

  • Non-academic visitors to the University without eduroam credentials
  • Conference Guests
  • Event attendees

Students and staff should continue to use the University’s main wifi services as usual, including eduroam and mydevices.

For more information on the University’s wifi services see the IT Services web pages.

How do guests connect?

To get online, guests can simply:

  1. Select UoY‑Fi Guest from the list of available wifi networks.
  2. Click Connect to accept the terms and conditions. Once connected, users will have internet access. Users are required to click Connect again every 24 hours to continue using the service.
