Changes to First Bus routes and fares

Posted on 5 July 2023

First Bus have released the new timetable and routes for this academic year. They are also introducing fare increases across all routes from 24 July. If you plan on using the buses please read on.

From 24 July 2023, First Bus are altering fares on student / University staff services. They have confirmed that this is a result of the impact of inflation on their costs, as well as a stagnation of prices for over 5 years.

Following discussions we are obtaining a number of discount codes for staff and students to use when purchasing weekly and monthly tickets, which will ensure these fares remain at their current price until our new contract with First begins on 23 September. More details on how to use the discount codes will be shared over the coming weeks before the increase on 24 July.

Changes to fairs

Fares are rising by approximately 30%, with the  cheapest ‘per day’ ticket now 94p (using the annual pass). An average journey remains below the £2 Government bus fare cap.

Full details are available on this First Bus web page.

Changes to routes

From 24 September 2023

  • Routes 68 and 69 are free intercampus shuttles for staff and students. They are free to travel between their various locations, spanning the bus interchange and Sport Village on Campus East across to Heslington Hall, the Library or James College on Campus West.
  • Routes 68 and 69 have differing routes and timetables so please visit the Travel and Transport web page for full details or the First App.
  • Routes 68 and 69 will also be fully serviced by double decker buses to alleviate problems with overcrowding.
  • The 66 and 67 are fully paid for routes and no longer offer any free travel. These buses will travel between both campuses and onwards into the city centre.

We are very disappointed to see these increased fares, which come after some months of contractual discussions and engagement with First Bus. It is critical however that we maintain a regular, efficient and sustainable bus provision for our staff and student; operating to, from and across our campuses, which First Bus will continue to deliver for the next 12 months.

We understand that staff and students will be concerned by this news, especially at a time when there are many other pressures on the cost of living. Please remember there is general information about financial help and advice available to students on the Cost of Living Hub and for staff on cost of living web page.
