Performance and Development Review
Posted on Wednesday 8 April 2026
Last year we undertook an extensive review of the PDR framework. Over 560 colleagues responded to our survey and a number joined us for exploratory focus groups. Based on this feedback we piloted a refreshed approach within a number of teams across the university. To conclude the review and make key decisions on the final approach, we held discussion with UEB and had further in depth conversation with a number of its members. A huge thank you to all the colleagues who contributed their time and ideas to this review and pilot exercise.
We are pleased to be rolling out the refreshed approach to all colleagues this year and you will use the new PDR in the July to October review window this year.
Guidance is being refreshed and we’ll be rolling out a new training package for all Reviewers to ensure colleagues feel confident in the new process. There will also be some training available for Reviewees. So we will be in touch again soon with further details. For now we can share the key features of the revised PDR:
- Big picture approach - alignment of individual and team objectives with university goals so colleagues feel a greater sense of how their work contributes to the successes of the University.
- Focussing on quality conversation rather than being ‘assessed’ - we want to create greater psychological safety by removing ratings and enabling colleagues to give and receive constructive feedback.
- Professional growth and development - the PDR process will be used to identify training and development needs across the University.
- No surprises - whilst there will still be an annual meeting, the new approach aims to create a culture of regular year round check-ins. Allowing for regular two way feedback opportunities and early intervention where there are development needs.
Here are some details of the 2026 PDR Timeline. Senior Leaders will be having conversations in May and June to start the sequencing of PDR meetings and cascade priorities to inform individual objectives. We ask Reviewers to start thinking about the timing of 2026 review conversations. Details of training and further process guidance will be shared early next month. Any questions in the meantime please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
