PGR leave
There are three different types of leave available to our PGRs depending on the reason and length of leave to be taken. This page sets out what leave you should request.
Annual leave
Subject to any conditions imposed by a research council or other sponsor or funding body, you are entitled to the same annual leave as members of staff (normally 38 days in any year, including public holidays and University closure days for full-time PGRs (pro-rata for part-time PGRs).
Short-term leave
Short-term leave enables you to take authorised time away - typically less than 30 days, but up to 60 days in some circumstances - from your studies for a valid reason.
You should use short-term leave for minor/short-term ill-health (‘sick leave’), but short-term leave can also be requested for other reasons including:
- parental leave (for childcare eg if your child is ill or your usual childcare arrangements have broken down)
- emergency leave (for caring responsibilities or to deal with a serious domestic situation)
- compassionate leave (eg to attend a funeral)
Short-term leave does not pause your enrolment. For further details, please see the Policy on PGR Leave.
- You can request short-term leave through your e:Vision account.
Leave of absence
A leave of absence allows you to take an authorised break from your studies - normally for at least one month - for a documented medical or personal reason, including for maternity/paternity and serious ill-health.
A leave of absence pauses your enrolment, which means that your minimum and normal enrolment period, and your maximum study will be extended by the duration of the leave of absence: the dates for any formal progress reviews (if applicable) and your final thesis submission deadline will also be amended.
For more information on leave of absence - including how to apply - please see our dedicated PGR leave of absence page and the Policy on PGR Leave.
