Development and Cultural Processes spans early infancy to old age and encompasses cross-cultural and cross-species research. We have a particular strength in understanding factors predicting educational attainment.

Our longitudinal research has identified predictors of typical and disordered vocabulary, spelling, reading and mathematical abilities. Research involving communities across the globe has shown how culture may shape perception, infants' emotion discrimination and various social behaviours in children. We also investigate the interactions between culture, language and perception.

Research in this area involves strong links with schools across the UK and Europe as well as museums, charities and public engagement organisations.
