Yorkshire & Humber Policy Engagement & Research Network (Y-PERN)

Y-PERN is a new network-based approach to inclusive and place-based academic policy engagement and research.

Y-PERN works together with Yorkshire Universities (YU) and Yorkshire and Humber Councils (YHC), to identify actions and solutions to some of the major opportunities and challenges facing the region.

Y-PERN is one of The York Policy Engine’s flagship projects. In January we attended the Y-PERN inaugural conference at the University of Leeds, where we had an opportunity to connect with charities and councils in the region and understand how they can better work together to influence policy. The event was attended by over 100 delegates from across the network, where key discussions were held on pressing issues of the day: The cost of living crisis; compatting deep-rooted inequalities; and the importance of investing in critical infrastructure, were just some of the themes that formed panel discussions as part of the event.

Key industry and sector professionals presented interesting and pioneering projects related to these important issues, providing insightful and compelling case-studies for tackling challenges in the region: Kate Hainsworth, Chief Executive of Leeds Community Foundation  outlined major challenges to funding due to rising living costs and called for collaboration with communities, councils, charities and Higher Education, to mitigate its effects; Professor Vincent Goodstadt, presented on the UK2070 Commission: an independent inquiry into city and regional inequalities in the UK. Professor Goodstadt flagged the urgency to do policy differently or to continue failing in tackling inequality. Professor Liz Towns-Andrews at Huddersfield summarised the work of their National Health Innovation Centre and the undoubtable impact of people's wellness on business productivity.

The conference invoked a sense of purpose and determination by delegates, in realising Y-PERNs mission to enhance the effectiveness of inclusive regional development policy and strategy through meaningful collaboration. Hearing about the impactful and inspiring work already being done across the region, provided optimism for the future.

Recruitment for a Policy Fellow at York to support our delivery of Y-PERN is underway. The York Policy Engine looks forward to continuing its involvement with the network  as it develops, looking for ways to connect York with important engagement in the region and supporting our wider mission for public good.
