In July this year the Department of Physics welcomed 24 A-level physics students to a residential week at York through EDT’s Headstart programme, during which they had a flavour of what it’s like to study Physics at York. The group stayed in university accommodation, attended lectures on biophysics, quantum mechanics and relativity, and toured the Nanocentre and York Plasma Institute.
The students also completed group projects under the guidance of academic staff, culminating in an exhibition of academic posters at the end of the week. The posters were on a range of subjects including X-Ray Crystallography, Computational Modelling and the Thermoelectric Effect, and Quantum Superposition. Observers commented on their high standard and evident hard work of the students.
Outside of working hours the group, in the company of current university students, enjoyed evening activities like bowling, a meal out and ghost tour in York city centre, a visit to the university Astrocampus, and a pub quiz in a student union bar.
