Mind and Reason

We are interested in a wide range of issues in the philosophy of mind with particular strengths in the proper characterisation and role of conscious states like perception, imagination, episodic memory, and the emotions.
There are also strong interests in metaphysical issues relating causation, colour, mathematics, properties and the nature of time. Our approach to these issues draws on insights from history of philosophy including the phenomenological tradition.

We have done significant research in the theoretical understanding of the typical beliefs of those subjects with delusions and related phenomena such as belief in conspiracy theories.

Our research has also been applied, in partnership with colleagues from Computer Science, to the issues raised by AI including the characterisation of artificial autonomous systems and implications for our understanding and attribution of responsibility.

The Mind and Reason group meet on Wednesday afternoons most term times to present their work in progress to other members of the group. Sometimes we have also have guest speakers or visiting academics join the group. The membership ranges from senior academics to those starting out on their research career as PhD students.
