IMechE Formula Student (FS) pitches different universities against one another to design, build and race single-seater formula-style cars.

The York team, founded in 2022, will make its racing debut this July competing in the Class 1 race with a fully electric vehicle, which will see the 50-strong team go wheel-to-wheel with over 100 university teams from across the globe.

Hands-on experience

York Formula Student is a student-led organisation where members from all backgrounds gain hands-on experience in engineering, logistics, and business management.

Teams taking part in the competition must also present a business presentation and manage their finances while running the team.

Operating out of the Church Lane Building on campus, the team is supported through multiple sources, including funding from a YuFund and YorkSU Grant, support from the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology and sponsorships from a portfolio of industry partners such as engineering company Accu, who provide credit for their store and technical expertise.

This year the team was supported by Warwick University and their formula student team who provided the car’s battery and other components.

Building a foundation

Tom Comrie, a final year Computer Science student and Team Principal at York, said: “As we approach our fourth anniversary, the leap to a fully electric vehicle represents the pinnacle of our progress.

"We aren't just building a car; we are building a foundation for York’s future in the competitive motorsport industry.”

Tom added: “We have over 50 hard-working students within the team spread across our engineering, business and driver teams.

“Representing the University of York is a real honour, but we aren’t just making up the numbers: we aim to challenge the established teams and make real progress.”

The competition takes place at Silverstone from 15-19 July.
