Feed the Planet - Conversations on Food and Climate Change, explores how we can change our diets to eat more sustainably.
The podcast features conversations with Professor Bridle, Chair of Food, Climate and Society and other leading experts, examining the positive changes we can make, the barriers that get in our way and how we can overcome them.
The series aims to provide listeners with the detailed information they need to make informed choices about the food on their plates, as well as the bigger picture of systemic change.
Plant alternatives
The first episode explores the rise of plant milks and other plant based alternative foods, comparing their environmental impact to meat and dairy products. Other episodes consider how cooking contributes to climate impact, the health benefits of planet-friendly diets and the misconceptions around the importance of ‘eating local’.
Professor Sarah Bridle said: “The food system causes about one third of global greenhouse gas emissions. If we want to tackle climate change, we need to change what we eat. Citizens are key to making that change happen, through the food choices they make and the influence they exert. But a big barrier to adopting a more planet friendly diet is the lack of detailed information which prevents people from making informed choices.
“Across the series we dig into research and data to examine which choices have the biggest impact. By far the most positive change we can make is to eat more plants but we also analyse the importance of factors like packaging, food waste, cooking and transport - whilst remembering that life is messy and changing your diet is not straightforward. Whether you already spend a lot of time trying to eat in a way that’s healthy for the planet, or whether you’re keen but not sure where to start, this podcast is here to help.”
Disrupting food systems
Professor Bridle’s recent work focuses on how to feed the UK amid catastrophic food system disruption and the resilience of the UK food system.
