Posted on Tuesday 3 March 2015

The University of York will offer 60 taught Masters scholarships worth £10,000 each to qualifying students this year.

The York Masters Opportunity Scholarships are available to students liable to pay fees at the home rate who are starting studies in September 2015. Part of a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) initiative, the scholarships aim to remove barriers to postgraduate education for students from under-represented groups.

The University will consider applications from those who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Students who have been in Local Authority Care or supported by the Foyer Federation
  • Applicants who are or have been in receipt of the Disabled Students’ Allowance
  • Students who have been in receipt of the maximum Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant whilst an undergraduate
  • Graduates who are the first in their family, not including siblings, to attend higher education on entry to undergraduate study
  • Students from a Low Participation Neighbourhood, defined by their home postcode on entry to undergraduate study

Scholarships are available to students applying to any department who have completed an undergraduate course charged at the higher tuition fee rates since 2012-13. The recipient must also have been offered a place for entry onto a taught Masters degree programme, and be a permanent resident of the UK or EU.

Simon Willis, Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions, said: "The University of York is strongly committed to widening access to postgraduate education. We are therefore very pleased to announce the availability of 60 York Masters Opportunity Scholarships, worth £10,000 each, for students who may not otherwise have had an opportunity to study at postgraduate level.  These scholarships have the potential to significantly change the lives of the students who receive them by supporting them in their studies at a world-leading institution.”

If successful, scholarship money will be awarded as a fee waiver and stipend paid in four instalments over the academic year.
