Seven more University of York students will receive support during their degree thanks to staff from the University branch of Santander and across the region.

Led by Christopher Watson, the Santander team raised £3,500 in sponsorship when they cycled 50km as part of YuCycle 2015 - an amount which was matched by the Santander Foundation.

Rachel Sellars, Santander University Relationship Branch Manager at University of York, said: “YuCycle is always such a great thing to be involved with, it has a great atmosphere and each year the event gets bigger and better. We are extremely pleased to have been able to support more University of York students this year through our fundraising and Santander’s matched donation.”

Held in June, the community cycling event YuCycle raised more than £13,000 for the University’s Achieving Excellence Bursaries. The bursaries enable students from lower income families to get to seize opportunities at York that will have the most impact on their future, supporting them financially in their second and third years with £1,050 annually.

Susie Braithwaite, YuCycle organiser, said: “Santander Universities team have continued to lead the way in supporting student opportunity through their participation in YuCycle, showing their commitment to opportunity for all.  We are extremely grateful for their involvement and enthusiasm in encouraging others to take part also.  The £7,000 raised this year brings Santander staff support to a total of £15,600 raised by the team over the past 3 years.”
