Research Associate in Quantum Communications

The Department of Mathematics at the University of York is seeking a talented postdoctoral research associate to work with Dr Roger Colbeck as part of this project funded by the EPSRC’s Quantum Communications Hub. The project will involve developing models for one or two implementations of quantum random number generators, liaising with experimental colleagues at the National Physical Laboratory to ensure the suitability of the models.

The post is for up to 12 months to start in summer/autumn 2018. The precise start date is subject to negotiation, although a later start date may mean a shorter contract as funding is time-constrained.

Role

The main responsibilities are:

  • To conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research
  • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research
  • To undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities connected to the research project, including conference organisation, and the development of promotional or educational material including website maintenance and development, as required
  • To provide guidance to other project partners and to interact with them to understand the experimental parameters that are achieved.
  • To co-ordinate and attend meetings and research visits with project partners

Key Requirements

You should hold an equivalent of a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering by the start date of your appointment. Applicants with a background in quantum random number generation and with theoretical knowledge of the experimental requirements are especially encouraged to apply. You will also have the ability to develop research objectives and projects in collaboration with others.

You will have experience of writing up research work for publication and have the ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using your own initiative. You will also have the competency to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events.

The post is full time, 37 hours a week and salary will be in the range £31,604 - £32,528 a year on a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

Please contact Roger Colbeck email: roger.colbeck@york.ac.uk for an informal discussion about the role.
