Creativity Lab

Situated in the heart of the University of York at the Harry Fairhurst Building within Campus West, the Creativity Lab welcomes both staff and students.

Our state-of-the-art facility is a hub for exploring new and emerging technologies, tools and resources.

Workshops

Discover a range of events and training sessions, from introductory kit workshops that provide hands-on experience with new technology, to masterclasses and residences led by industry experts, enabling in-depth exploration of specific areas in digital creativity.

Teaching

Tailored to your needs, our bespoke teaching options cover everything. We have focused instruction on digital creativity and technology to embedded teaching for academic departments, encompassing multimedia tools such as podcasting and video editing.

Media Workstations

Each week, the Lab opens its doors to allow University of York staff, students and researchers to make use of our Media Workstations. These machines have a range of useful software, including Adobe Creative Cloud, game engines and a selection of 3D-modelling software. 

Whether it's for creative research, project development, fostering creative ideas or simply having fun, these sessions offer an open space for all. You can drop in to use our PCs with no need to book. We're open Monday - Friday. Availability on some days varies each week, due to other events. See our opening times for this week's availability.

Podcasting

The Creativity Lab's Podcasting studio provides a comfortable and functional space for you to record and host your own podcast. Before you can book our studio, you are required to attend a 30 minute training induction. This will show you how to get started with a podcast and to record your episode successfully.

The Historic Towns Trust cartography session went extremely well, and we were able to do everything we wanted to do. Our Trustees were very impressed by the facilities, and I'm also pleased to know more about what the Creativity Lab can do!

Equipment hire

University of York staff and students can take advantage of the Creativity Lab's free equipment hire service. Equipment such as VR headsets, camera and audio equipment is available to borrow, with support from the Creativity Lab team of technical experts. The equipment can be booked online via our equipment catalogue. See our equipment information for more details on which items you may need. When booking, please ensure you read our terms and conditions.

I think we are unbelievably privileged to have full unattended access to so many cool things such as a 3D printer, CRICUT machine, podcast studio, powerful computers and the ability to borrow such a wide variety of equipment!

1:1 Support

Available to all members of the university, we offer a series appointments around certain technologies, where you can come in for extra support with your own projects. These are held in the Library Creativity Lab (LFA/103), see our directions to the Creativity Lab for more details. 

Digital Creativity Appointments

Our one-to-one appointments are available for support when you are working on a specific digital project. Appointments are available between 1pm and 4pm on a Monday. You can book for areas such as 3D modelling, 3D scanning, Video editing and Animation.

Audio and Podcasting support

If you're looking for support with how to edit your own audio files or need advice on producing a podcast, we offer an opportunity to come and speak to our team. Bring your own recordings along and we can assist you with your audio project.
