Updated: Morell Library refurbishment

The Morrell Library entrance has been redeveloped over the Summer, as part of the University’s long term investment in campus infrastructure. The refurbishment provides more study spaces and a more welcoming, modern look and feel. This post will tell you all you need to know about what will happen when and how it will affect library services, including Fairhurst temporary entrance which we'll be using until late October.

The new entrance area will be more accessible, with improved study spaces, inclusive toilet facilities, and clearer signage.  

Key dates for the Morrell Refurbishment

The major building work will began on 5 June 2026, and it is anticipated this will be complete in Autumn later in the year: specifically the aim is to finish in the last week of October.

Getting in and out of the library 

Although much of the interior work is complete, the main entrance is currently unavailable: entrance and exit is now via Floor 0 of the Fairhurst building, next door to the Morrell. 

There is both a map of the route to the temporary entrance, and a video showing the route, available on Bluesky.

The library remains open 8am - midnight, seven days a week as usual, during this time. 

Accessing the Help Desk 

Library Reception can be found in the Fairhurst by the temporary entrance. The Help Desk has re-opened and is available 10am - 4pm, Monday to Friday, on Floor 0 of the Morrell, in the new Lounge area.

Accessing our Flexible Loan books 

All our books on Floors 1, 2 and 3 of the Morrell (and those in the Fairhurst and Burton) are accessible as normal during the refurbishment.

Accessing books in the Compact Stores

Access to materials in our Compact Stores 1 and 2 on Floor 0 has now resumed. Users are welcome to access these areas at any point during our opening hours and to do so you will need to get in touch with the Help desk during service hours for us to add access to your University card (Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm). We will then be able to provide you with a detailed overview of how to access materials in these areas.

Accessing Lockers

The Morrell Library lockers are currently out of service while we move everything around, but will be back in use very soon. The Amazon Lockers outside the building have moved to Market Square.

Car parking 

From 1 June 2026 a site compound will be established on car park 3.1 (Campus North) with the temporary closure of around 20 bays.
