“Phillip’s appointment as a Deputy District Judge is a rare and distinguished achievement for an academic.''

York Law School is pleased to announce that Professor Phillip Morgan, Professor of Private Law, has been appointed a Deputy District Judge by The Lady Chief Justice, The Rt Hon Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill.

Phillip will be sitting on the North Eastern Circuit in the civil and family jurisdictions, presiding over a wide range of civil and family matters. The Deputy District Judge role is a part-time, (known as “fee-paid”), judicial appointment, allowing Phillip to continue his academic work at York Law School alongside his judicial responsibilities.

“Phillip’s appointment as a Deputy District Judge is a rare and distinguished achievement for an academic. It reflects his standing in the field and will enrich both his teaching and research at York Law School.” said Professor Sue Westwood, Head of York Law School.

This appointment adds to Phillip’s existing roles.  In January 2023 he was appointed as a fee-paid Judge of the Employment Tribunals of England and Wales by The Lord Chancellor, and as a fee-paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal by the Senior President of Tribunals.

We congratulate Phillip on this prestigious appointment and look forward to the insights and benefits it will bring to our students, colleagues, and wider community.
