Wifi security enhancement for eduroam
Posted on Monday 30 March 2026
As part of this improvement, the University will move from the current WPA2 security standard to WPA3 Enterprise, using a “transition mode.” This change is designed to strengthen protection for your data while ensuring that existing devices can continue to connect.
What does this mean for you?
For most users, there will be little to no disruption. Your devices should continue to connect to eduroam as usual. The “transition mode” allows both the old (WPA2) and new (WPA3) standards to operate at the same time, meaning all devices should still be able to connect to eduroam, including older devices that do not yet support WPA3.
Why are we making this change?
Upgrading to WPA3 Enterprise brings several important benefits:
- Improved security: WPA3 offers stronger protection against attempts to guess passwords or intercept data, helping keep your personal and academic information safe.
- Better privacy: Enhanced encryption makes it harder for others to view or access your online activity when connected to eduroam.
- Access to newer wifi technology: Moving to WPA3 enables the use of the 6 GHz wireless band on compatible devices, which can offer faster speeds, lower congestion, and a more reliable connection in busy areas.
- Future-ready network: As newer devices increasingly support WPA3, this upgrade ensures the University’s wifi remains modern, secure, and reliable.
Do you need to do anything?
In most cases, no action is required. However, if you experience any issues connecting, try “forgetting” the eduroam network on your device and setting up eduroam again to refresh your connection settings. Information on how to do this can be found on the campus wifi (eduroam) support pages.
If you use a Microsoft Windows device and connect to eduroam at other institutions, please ensure you have configured your device using the official setup tool. This will help avoid any interruption to your connection when roaming between organisations.
