Dr Kate Nichols has been awarded a prestigious Paul Mellon Centre postdoctoral fellowship to prepare and revise her PhD thesis for publication. "Greece and Rome at the Crystal Palace: Classical sculpture and modern Britain 1854-1936" explores the importance of classical sculpture in British social, political, commercial and aesthetic discourses. Each chapter examines a different thread in the controversies stimulated by the Crystal Palace's exhibition of Greek and Roman sculpture to a mass audience, discussing how classical sculpture figured in debates over design reform, consumerism, archaeological authenticity, beauty and morality, race, and the British Empire.
