Equality and diversity

The Department of Health Sciences is committed to the development and promotion of a culture of equality and diversity, dignity, courtesy and respect.  

The department recognises the importance of supporting all staff and students, including the provision of relevant support relating to the protected characteristics. 

The department has a Equality and Diversity Champion, Devi Nannen, to provide the following support:

  • Influence and inform the department – to ensure that equality and diversity are at the top of our agenda
  • Raise awareness of the equality dimension in decision making
  • Act as a conduit for information on equality initiatives
  • Celebrate success and developments
  • Support the department in Athena SWAN and other initiatives for example, the Race Equality Charter mark
  • Feed back into University structure

Athena SWAN

The Department of Health Sciences strives to provide a positive working environment that enables our staff and students to contribute fully to the life of the Department, to achieve their full potential, and to flourish.


The Athena SWAN Charter is based on ten key principles. By being part of Athena SWAN, institutions are committing to a progressive charter; adopting these principles within their policies, practices, action plans and culture.

The Department of Health Sciences recognises the importance of ensuring equality and fairness for all our staff and students. We are proud to have developed an Athena SWAN working group that is promoting a culture of equality within the Department. Within this, we recognise the importance of recruiting, encouraging and retaining women at all stages of their career. The group is striving to ensure that equal opportunities exist in every aspect of Departmental working.

Our group successfully achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze Award in 2013. We are now working towards our application for the Silver Award due to be submitted in November 2016.
