Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The Department of Health Sciences is committed to the ongoing development and promotion of an inclusive culture of equality and diversity, dignity, courtesy and respect.

The department recognises the importance of empowering and supporting all staff and students, and is focussed on the provision of relevant support relating to all protected characteristics.

The department has an active Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Currently co-chaired by Jen Brown and Jo Rose, as well as multiple Equality Champions in all staff groups across the department.

The Committee's activities include:

  • Influencing and informing the department to ensure that equality and diversity are considered as part of everyone's agenda
  • Raising awareness of where equality, diversity and inclusion need to be considered in decision making, strategies and approaches to work, teaching and research
  • Acting as a conduit for information on equality initiatives
  • Celebrating members of the community, their successes and ensuring developments are made within the culture of the department to continue building an inclusive environment
  • Supporting the department in areas of work such as Athena SWAN
  • Feeding back into University structures, central EDI initiatives and broader University networks
  • Overseeing development of initiatives such as awareness raising, training, mentoring and support related to EDI.
