Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) 

Introduction: 

The Department of Environment of Geography and York-Maastricht Partnership (YMP) are seeking four (one per module) Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to deliver sustainability and business teaching on our new joint MSc with Maastricht University on Sustainable Business: Leadership, Innovation and Management. You will have expertise in sustainability and/or sustainable business and be passionate about delivering an outstanding learning experience for our students, including through problem-based and research-informed learning. 

Main purpose of the role:

  • To facilitate learning seminars with postgraduate students from the University of York and Maastricht University. 

  • To apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.

  • To carry out a review of problem-based learning seminars in collaboration with academic staff that will be fed into wider on-going curriculum review at a programme level. 

Key responsibilities:

  • To support the teaching objectives of the department and York-Maastricht Partnership (YMP) by delivering problem-based learning seminars in line with current strategy.

  • To obtain and analyse feedback on seminar teaching design and delivery in collaboration with academic staff. 

Person specification

Qualifications: 

  • Essential: MSc in sustainability or management or a closely related field with a demonstrable interest in sustainability issues (e.g. thesis, an internship, voluntary work).
  • Essential: Have completed or have a willingness to complete the Introduction to Teaching and Learning.
  • Desirable: A willingness to undertake the York Learning and Teaching Award (YLTA) 
  • Desirable: An ongoing PhD with a research subject related to sustainability.

 Knowledge:

  • Essential: Knowledge in sustainability and/or sustainable business sufficient to deliver seminar teaching and provide relevant learning support to students at postgraduate level. 

Desirable Skills, abilities and competencies:

  • Essential: Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, principally orally and in writing, using a range of media and resources.
  • Essential: Ability to supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills e.g. formatting presentation documents, and assist with learning problems within the classroom
  • Desirable: Have experience as a teacher or student in student-centred pedagogy, or being willing to adopt this kind of pedagogy. 

Personal attributes:

  • Essential: Positive attitude to colleagues and students 
  • Essential: Collaborative ethos

At a minimum, each GTA will have at least 12 hours of contact time with the students (with prep time paid in addition).  Applicants could work on more than one module, dependent on subject knowledge

Autumn semester modules:
  • Introduction to Sustainable Business (8 week module, September-October): 14 hours of GTA seminars  (2 x per week)
  • Environmental Sustainability (8 week module), November-December): 14 hours of GTA seminars (2 x per week)
  • Sustainable Business Innovation (8 week module, November-December): 14 hours  of GTA seminars  (2 x per week)
Autumn/Spring semester modules:
  • Sustainable Entrepreneurship (8 week module, December-February): 12 hours  of GTA seminars  (2 x per week or thereabouts)
  • Social and Economic Sustainability (8 week module, December-February): 14 hours of GTA seminars (2 x per week)
