A New Era for Female Entrepreneurship in York & North Yorkshire

"We have reached a tipping point where governments, business support organisations, and female entrepreneurs themselves realise the enormous value of female enterprise to the regional and national economy. It is vital for the future success of the region that we have a clear, data-driven understanding of the needs of this community, to ensure that we maximise our, and their, chances of success and drive inclusive growth for all."
Professor Kiran Trehan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise, Partnerships and Engagement

The University of York and the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) have conducted research to understand the barriers faced by female founders in York and North Yorkshire. In developing this report specifically for York & North Yorkshire, we hope to address the challenges unique to this region and co-create solution-based approaches.

In this episode, we discuss inequality and caregiving expectations. We explore how systemic barriers, rigid workplaces, and gendered caregiving roles push women to build businesses on their own terms—while confronting the emotional toll and logistical maze of doing it all. We're joined by Valentina Hynes, SVH Inc and Emily Pickard, York Mumbler.

100 Voices

Our 100 Voices campaign is a collective response to the research findings, a storytelling movement designed to raise the visibility of female entrepreneurs and ensure they are recognised, celebrated, and supported. Through this campaign, we will showcase the journeys, challenges, and successes of 100 women, highlighting the support available to female entrepreneurs and placing their stories at the heart of a regional shift toward inclusive business support, partnering with local business support from the Growth Hub and City of York Council.
