We are keen to work with external partners to develop mutually-beneficial relationships. Projects can vary from short-term consultancy to long-term staff exchange partnerships; co-creation of research to joint applications for government research funding.

Funding collaborative research

The University has a strong tradition of collaborative research and knowledge exchange, orientated around employing our research excellence to solve industrially relevant problems. 

This work takes place through commercial partnerships and via a range of funding opportunities including those from Government, Third Sector and EU agencies. These also include University internal UKRI Impact Accelerator Accounts and Research Priming Funds among others.

By working together with a University academic team, we can help partners identify and develop solutions to pressing problems. 

Potential funding sources include:

  • UKRI
    UKRI funds businesses to develop innovative products, processes or services. You can also access expertise and specialist equipment to develop prototypes and products.
  • Wellcome Trust
    The Wellcome Trust supports discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, with three worldwide health challenges: mental health, global heating and infectious diseases.
  • Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
    The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation work with partners worldwide to tackle critical problems in six program areas: Gender Equality, Global Health, Global Development, Global Growth & Opportunity, Global Policy & Advocacy and US division.
  • Knowledge Transfer Partnerships 
    Funding available for 12 months to 36 months for company-based research projects.
  • Innovate UK
    funding available for company-led research projects.

As part of any collaboration, the University enters into contracts with third parties. Your contract will be drafted and/or reviewed by our Research and Knowledge Exchange Contracts team (RKEC).
