Policy engagement

We're engaged in policy-focused research and consultancy across our subject groups. We work closely with policy makers to translate evidence into policy advice across a wide range of sectors and organisational contexts and at local, regional, national and international levels.

Here are some examples of the policy engagement we're currently involved with.

Mapping and evaluating Specialist Autism Team service models

This project is evaluating Specialist Autism Teams, and investigating their role in supporting autism-specialist practice in mainstream services.

Connecting People pilot study

Connecting People is an evidence-informed approach to supporting people to connect with others.

Understanding family and community vulnerabilities in transition to net zero

This project will build a framework for understanding and responding to how the UK’s transition to net zero will affect families, and the communities in which they live.

Housing and homelessness

The School has a longstanding working relationship with the European Federation of Homelessness Organisations (FEANTSA) and contributes directly to the European Observatory on Homelessness. We've also collaborated with the City of York Council in developing the homelessness and rough sleeping strategy for the city. Through our work as part of the Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre on the Policing Housing Precarity and Homelessness (PHRASE) project, we're collaborating with police services and homelessness sectors in our region.

INGENIOUS

Understanding the sources, transformations and fates of indoor air pollutants.

ActEarly

ActEarly is a UKPRP funded research consortium which focuses on upstream early life interventions to improve the health and opportunities for children living in two contrasting areas with high levels of child poverty: Bradford, Yorkshire and Tower Hamlets, London.

FixOurFood

The FixOurFood programme aims to transform the Yorkshire food system to one that is regenerative – benefitting both human and planetary health. The programme takes a multidisciplinary approach that reflects the inherent complexity of the food system.

Influencing policy is one of the key ambitions of the programme and one way the team does this is by providing evidence to Parliamentary inquiries. Team members are also supporting development of the new UK Food Strategy.

Cohering like-minded groups around a challenge is another way that FixOurFood aims to stimulate change. For example, following a round table convened by the team from the School for Business and Society at York, a policy and practice brief was published on public sector food and drink procurement in the UK. The policy note explores current challenges as well as providing recommendations to catalyse food procurement transformation.

You can find out more about FixOurFood on our website and the outputs from the programme are available on the Outputs page. For more information, email: fixourfood@york.ac.uk
