Practice research brings practitioners, services users and researchers together to answer questions of importance in social work practice.
An international community of practice researchers has developed over the last two decades to share methods, findings and innovations, and to learn from one another. 20 years after the first International Conference on Practice Research in Social Work, which was held in Salisbury, we will be returning to the UK in 2028.
The conference theme highlights that we have much to celebrate. Our community has grown in collective wisdom, experience and knowledge over these two decades and practice research itself has evolved.
As a focus for our meeting in York, we will explore innovations in practice research and its impact on social work practice, while at the same time recognising that practice research is conducted in complex and challenging contexts.
We invite practitioners, researchers, service users and other social service providers from across the globe to join us in York.
York is a beautiful cathedral city 2 hours north of London by train - it has lots to offer visitors and many places to explore. York is located in the county of North Yorkshire, which has many attractions within easy reach of the city.

This conference will be hosted by the Mental Health Social Care Research Centre and the Social Work group in the School for Business and Society in collaboration with practitioners and researchers from the UK and around the world.

8th October 2027 (Fri) - Call for abstracts closes
1st December 2027 (Weds) - Conference registration opens
17th December 2027 (Fri) - Notification of abstract review outcome
