PhD studentships & scholarships

There are a number of studentships and scholarships available to support research leading to a PhD. Your nationality will determine which source of funding  you are eligible for. Please select the appropriate tab below for information relevant to you.

UK Applicants

Several sources of funding are available to UK applicants who hold the equivalent of a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours degree from a UK university and whom specific academics wish to take into their laboratory. To be considered for one of these studentships please state on your application form that you are seeking financial support.

Studentships for designated projects

  • Funded by UK Research Councils, charities, industry and awarded to specific projects
  • Cover annual tuition fees at UK/EU rate
  • Tax-free annual stipend normally at the standard Research Council rate (£15,000 for 2019/2020)
  • Research costs
  • Contribution to conference costs

EU Applicants

Applicants from the European Union (EU) countries outside the UK may or may not be eligible for fully-funded Research Councils studentships. In some cases, studentships cover both tuition fees and living expenses, whereas in others the studentship covers tuition fees but not living expenses. Applicants not eligible for full studentships should try to seek alternative funding to cover their living costs.

UK Research Council studentships eligibility:

  • Full studentships for EU nationals who have been resident in the UK for a period of 3 years or more immediately prior to the start of the project. These studentships cover tuition fees and living expenses and a contribution to research and conference costs.
  • Partial studentships for EU applicants who have not been resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the project. Studentships that cover the cost of annual tuition fees can be awarded; other sources of funding must be found to cover living expenses, etc.
