University of York students make it to the final of the Engineers in Business Innovation Competition.
Interactive Media students Emily Martin and Wan Yun Law were finalists in the Engineers in Business Innovation Competition for their entry ‘North Star’.
Emily and Wan created the North Star, a modern and discreet tracking device to help keep vulnerable people safe, as the first product from their business LightHouse. LightHouse is a UK based company which is focused on creating a positive change using modern tracking software solutions.
The North Star is a discreet, magnetic tracker which works with paired software to keep vulnerable people safe while still protecting their privacy. The device software allows carers/guardians to monitor a person’s whereabouts if they leave their ‘safe zones’. Their location is only disclosed to trusted contacts once they have left these zones. To enable a quick rescue response, North Star works with geocoding app What3Words which is used by the emergency services.
Emily and Wan competed against nine other teams from universities across the country in a live, online Dragon’s Den style pitching session hosted at the Royal Academy of Engineering on 22 October 2021.
