Remembering Richard Shephard MBE

News | Posted on Tuesday 23 February 2021

The Music Department is sad to report the death of Dr Richard Shephard, Honorary Visiting Fellow of the Department, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2008.

Richard was an internationally-renowned composer of church music, was for many years the Headmaster of the Minster School, York, Chamberlain of York Minster and Director of Development at York Minster. He was a Lay Canon at York Minster and in 2012 was made an MBE for services to music and education. Richard was a great friend and supporter of the Music Department and will be sorely missed. His compositions for choir were very popular with University Choir, who performed his Ye Nations all' for choir and Brass Band in December 2019; Chamber Choir, for whom he wrote several compositions; and The 24 (you can watch The 24 perform Richard's Most Holy Night by clicking on the video below).
