The Music Department is sad to report the death, at the age of 104, of Dr Francis Jackson.

The distinguished organist and composer was Organist and Master of Music at York Minster from 1946 to 1982 and was, on his retirement, awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of York. Dr Jackson continued to be active as a performer and composer well into his retirement and in 2000, at the age of 83, a CD was released of him performing the Percy Whitlock Organ Symphony (recorded in York Minster) and own Concerto for Organ, Strings, Timpani and Celeste (recorded in the Lyons Concert Hall) accompanied by the University of York Orchestra.
