Pride Month 2025
Pride Month represents a unique opportunity for us all to reflect on who we are as a diverse University community and to show up to support our LGBT+ colleagues and students, enhancing their voice and understanding the difficulties they face, while celebrating the valuable contributions they make to life at the University.

There are several important initiatives and activities that the University is involved with throughout the year to support and raise awareness of the issues and barriers that are faced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBTQ+) people both in the UK and across the world. By listening to and working with our LGBTQ+ community our goal is to move towards the elimination of discrimination and unfair treatment on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation.
Raising the Progress Pride flag - 4 June
We will be continuing our tradition of raising the Progress Pride Flag on Greg’s Place on Wednesday 4 June, 1.30pm to 2.30pm to mark the start of the Pride Month. Come along to hear from colleagues as we raise the flag. This event will be sponsored by UNISON and UCU who will be providing refreshments and cakes.
Please be aware that photography and video recording will take place during the Progress Pride flag raising event, which may be used for marketing purposes by the University of York. If you have any concerns or would prefer not to feature, please email communications-support
@york.ac.uk . For further information about how we use photography or video which includes you please see our privacy notice.
We would like to invite all members of our community to join us for these Pride Month celebrations, and if you would like more information about how you can get involved in any of these activities, please contact us at equality
York Pride Parade - 7 June
This year the University will take part in the York Pride parade, marching from the Minster to the Knavesmire on Saturday 7 June, where we welcome all members of our community to join us and to stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ community.
If you would like to join us for the parade, the University group will be meeting in St Sampson’s Square between 11am and 11.20am.

Glossary of EDI terminology
We believe that in order to understand who we are as a University community and to gain a better insight into the diverse identities of our staff and students, it is important for us to be aware of the equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) terminology that is associated with individuals and groups.
With that in mind, we have compiled a glossary of EDI terms, intended as a starting point for people to further their knowledge and understanding of this area.
