Programme structure

The programme will be delivered by expert staff from the University’s People and Organisational Development team over the course of three days in the first week of the Easter vacation (Wednesday 20 March – Friday 22 March 2019).  There will be a small amount of preparation to do before the first day which will take approximately two hours.

Day 1: Introduction to the concept of Leadership

A series of activities and discussions relating to the skills associated with being a good leader. Key skills on which the programme will focus:

  • Leadership and Team-work
  • Effective communication
  • Self-management
  • Problem solving
  • Commercial awareness

End of the day - participants will break into teams and will be given information relating to a challenge they must undertake in Day 2. The evening will be spent preparing for Day 2's challenges and tasks.

Day 2: Challenge Day

Participants will work in teams to complete a series of challenges, with the opportunity for different members to take the lead. Teams will need to make decisions under pressure and react to challenges.

Day 3: Summary, reflection and evaluation

The final day will involve discussions and workshops based around a review of the previous two days. Participants will be expected to reflect on and articulate the learning which has taken place.

Support the leaders of tomorrow

As part of the programme you will also get to support future students in their applications for the York Award and will be responsible for the assessment of these applications.

This a great opportunity to put your leadership skills into action and provides you with valuable insight into recruitment and selection processes.
