Professor Sue Hartley OBE

Professor Sue Hartley OBE is an internationally renowned ecologist. She is Vice-President for Research and Innovation at The University of Sheffield.

Her research interests focus on understanding how plants adapt to their environment and how they defend themselves against the organisms that attack them. 

In 2009 she delivered the televised annual Royal Institution Christmas lectures on the 300 Million Year War between plants and their natural enemies.

Sue has served as a trustee of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as a board member of Natural England and as President of the British Ecological Society.

She received an OBE for services to ecological research and public engagement in 2019.
