Finishing your studies
Find out more about what happens when you finish your studies.
Notification of Award
At the end of your York Online programme, after your final assessment has been approved at a Departmental Exam Board (or Module Board), your module marks across all modules will be reviewed at a Programme Exam Board (or Ratification Panel). The Ratification Panel will check that the award decision that has been calculated from your module marks is accurate, and then formally recommend your degree outcome to Senate. The Standing Committee on Assessment will then approve the outcome recommended by the Ratification Panel on behalf of Senate, at which point your final award result will be confirmed.
You will receive an email from the University when the Board of Examiners have made their decision, notifying you to view the result on e:vision.
Ratification Panels are scheduled six times a year. You will receive further information about the awards process once the provisional results for your capstone project module (CPM) are available in e:vision.
Graduation
After the Board of Examiners have made their decision, eligible students will receive an invitation to register for graduation via e:vision.
The University of York holds graduation ceremonies twice a year. The Ratification Panel that reviews your final assessment result will determine what graduation ceremony you will be eligible for, which may not be the next available one. We therefore recommend you do not make travel arrangements until your attendance at a ceremony has been confirmed.
The Graduation web pages contain useful information including how to prepare and what happens on the day of the ceremony.
Certificates and transcripts
You will be asked how you wish to receive your degree certificate when you register for graduation. You will also have access to your certificate and transcript digitally via Gradintel following your graduation. You will be invited to register for Gradintel once your award has been processed and your graduation date is confirmed.
If you require confirmation of your award prior to your graduation, please request a Confirmation of Award letter through your e:vision account (‘Your Study’ section). This document is not available until you have received your notification of award, sent shortly after the Board of Examiners have made their decision.
Should you require a replacement or validated copy of your degree certificate once you have had your award conferred on you, please refer to the certificates web page.
Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma
If you leave the University part way through your programme, or do not achieve the Masters award, you may have earned enough credit for an alternative award.
Award | Number of credits required |
---|---|
Masters (eg MBA, MPA, MSc, etc) |
180 |
Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) |
120 |
Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) |
60 |
Please note that some modules may not be permitted to contribute towards a PGCert or PGDip. You can check the exact award requirements for your programme of study in the programme specification for your degree programme.
If you do not achieve the Masters award, you will not be eligible to attend graduation. Your certificate will be uploaded to Gradintel after your PGCert or PGDip has been approved by Senate. You will be invited to register for Gradintel once your award has been processed.
References and letters
If you require a reference, you should contact your Academic Supervisor or an academic member of staff who is familiar with you.
You can request a confirmation of study letter at any time during your studies through e:vision.
If you need an interim transcript before you have received your Notification of Award, the Student Hub can validate your marks. Take a clear screenshot of your marks in e:vision and send the attachment to student-hub
Access to University services
Your borrowing rights at the University Library end on the last day of your studies.
Access to most IT Services facilities (including email) are withdrawn approximately 90 days after you finish your studies. IT Services recommend you save or transfer account data before they close - see IT information for student leavers.
If you leave the University part way through your programme, your access will be withdrawn 30 days after your withdrawal date.
Please ensure that your contact address is up to date on e:vision before you finish your studies.
Canvas
Access to Canvas will be withdrawn when your IT account expires. It is therefore important that you download any materials that you wish to keep before you lose access to your account. Canvas and Panopto do not support bulk download of materials.
