Shaping the appointment of your next Vice-Chancellor

News

Posted on Tuesday 7 July 2026

Earlier this month, Charlie Jeffery announced that he would be stepping down as York’s Vice-Chancellor.

To help us recruit an outstanding successor to the role, the University has partnered with executive search firm Perrett Laver to lead us through a thorough and independent recruitment process.

York has a proud history of academic excellence and social purpose. To find a leader who will champion these values and guide us into the future, we are now establishing the formal recruitment process. Crucially, this process begins with listening to the views of our staff on the opportunities and challenges ahead for York, and the qualities we should look for in our next leader.

How you can get involved

Perrett Laver we will be gathering staff insights through a phased approach over the coming weeks.

  • Survey: University employees will shortly receive a link to a survey. This is being run through our survey provider, Hive. The survey will run from Wednesday 8 July to Friday 24 July. Hive will send an email with a unique link directly to your inbox. You can also access the survey directly by logging in to the Hive homepage.

Recruitment timetable

Following the conclusion of the staff and wider stakeholder consultation, the feedback gathered will directly shape the job description and person specification. We’ll begin the search in September, and from there, we will establish the recruitment panels that will ultimately meet and assess potential candidates to feed into the formal committee.
