The Institute for Good Society aligns with York’s longstanding commitment to public good and with India’s National Education Policy (NEP 2020), which aims to strengthen connections between knowledge and societal challenges.
Located in one of the most globally connected cities in the Global South, the Institute in Mumbai will tackle issues such as urbanisation, technology, sustainability, economic development and cultural transformation, while drawing on York’s international research strengths.
Join us at the launch to learn more about:
- How the Institute for Good Society will ensure that the University of York Mumbai develops a visible research culture and builds research capacity from the outset
- The four key research streams and Living Lab approach, enabling academics to connect quickly with interdisciplinary teams, policy partners and applied research opportunities
- How the combination of York’s international research strengths and Mumbai will help generate insights relevant not only to India, but also to rapidly developing societies across Asia, Africa, and other regions of the Global South
- Future opportunities for visiting fellowships, short teaching visits and joint projects. The Institute will provide York researchers with an intellectual base in India, enabling engagement with the world’s most populous nation and one of the most rapidly evolving dynamic policy and economic environments
- How the Institute will function as a platform for industry collaboration and philanthropic funding, supporting partnerships with corporations, foundations and donors interested in advancing societal impact.

- Technology for Good - responsible AI, digital governance, and socially beneficial technological innovation - led by Professor Shilpa Bade-Gite
The concept of a 'Good Society' has a strong intellectual connection to research at the University of York. In particular, the work of Professor Kate Pickett has contributed significantly to global discussions about the social conditions that enable societies to thrive.
