Creating Christmas cheer for estranged students

Posted on 3 December 2021

Christmas stockings packed with gifts have been given to care experienced and estranged students, thanks to the support of the University community.

The generous donations of staff, students and alumni mean that this year’s Christmas Stocking Campaign raised a total of £4,243.75, enough to give stockings to 96 students, many of whom may not receive any other gifts.

Students collected their stockings at a ‘Mince pie event’, held in the Piazza Tipi outdoor space, with Vice-Chancellor Charlie Jeffery, who gave each of them handwritten Christmas cards.

The event came shortly after the University received an award ‘For Overall Excellence’ in the Stand Alone Pledge Awards, for the support we offer our estranged students.

Fran Hornsby, Dedicated Contact for our Care Experienced and Estranged Students, said: “We're absolutely delighted to receive this award. It is even more special as we were nominated for this by our very own students. It's an absolute privilege to know these individuals and be part of making a difference to them.”
